Ryan Welsh (19) of Kloof Country Club is starting to establish himself as one of the province's fastest improving players.

He won the Northern KwaZulu-Natal Open at Dundee Country Club a few weeks ago in a play-off against another emerging young player, Nathan Trodd (Maritzburg Golf Club).

It was a mighty battle, with three extra holes needed to settle matters between the two young warriors after both had returned 36 holes scores of two under par 140.

Welsh had a pair of 70s, while Trodd has 69 and 71.

“I was happy with how I played. Was solid all day, hitting greens and fairways,” he said.

“I knew Nathan was under par but didn't know how many or exactly what the situation was.”

He made a number of clutch par-saving putts on the closing nine, before a birdie on the 16th and the two closing pars.

This was enough to get him into the playoff, which he won on the third extra hole with a par.

A couple of shots behind was Mlamuli Sithebe of Utrecht Golf Club, also known as Elvis, who has come close to winning this tournament before.

Welsh has now won two tournaments on the KZN calendar, and it seems he likes the hot parts of the province, as he won the Zululand Open last year.

There'll be no resting on his laurels anytime soon as his younger brother Travis put in his best result in a major tournament, finishing in fourth place.

Pre-tournament favourite and multiple past champion, Corné van Deventer, said the area had had some good rains over the past couple of months and so the rough was a bit tough.

“It will be interesting to see how Dundee will play at the end of March for Interzone,” he said with a little grin.

On behalf of the players, he thanked long-time sponsor Brian du Toit of Farmers Agri-Care Dundee for his ongoing support.
