GAVIN Sole of Southbroom GC will captain the KwaZulu-Natal team this year. It's not really something he strived for, which is not to say he's unhappy about it or not up for the challenge. Ryan de Beer (Kloof), who has captained the team for several years, has moved to Underberg and started a family so his golf is on the backburner for a while.

Sole is really the ideal candidate. At 41, he's like a fine wine, getting better and better as he gets older. He's trimmed down a touch and so could be called Medium Fish as opposed to Big Fish.

The SA Interprovincial is in Port Elizabeth this year. Sole is under no illusions about the task that awaits. Last year, with a star-studded team, KZN was disappointing to say the least. So what can they really expect with at least four new players coming into the team?

Sole was unfazed. "Our goal is to win. That has to be our aim. I want players with heart, those that want to play for KwaZulu-Natal and be proud of it," he said. The four players expected to make it from last year are Sole, Vryheid's Gideon Pienaar (who was expecting to be a pro by now), Durban CC's Elton James (based in Johannesburg for work reasons) and Christiaan van der Merwe, now living in Cape Town. While in KZN Van der Merwe was a member at Maritzburg GC and then Prince's Grant. He'll need to rejoin one of them before the David Suddards Trophy at Durban CC on June 24. All this is not exactly the ideal situation to create team spirit, but not one that can't be overcome.

A squad of 12 has been chosen and includes James Searson (Royal Durban), Ryan Birnie (Durban CC), Leorin Pillay (Umdoni), Phil le Roux (Southbroom), Greg Upneck (Umhlali), Darren Gerrard (Southbroom), Darryn Myers (Kloof) and Bryan Wester (Bosch Hoek).

Colin Iddon (Southbroom) was named as manager of the InterProv team.

Places are still wide open to player's not in the squad and there will be everything to play for in the three tournaments to be played between now and when the team is chosen.
