KZN Seniors in July – Umdoni & Royal

KZN Senior Results from Umdoni Park 11/7/2023

It was a relatively small field of 68 golfers that turned up for our game at this little gem of a course at Pennington on the south coast. Umdoni is a challenging, undulating, short course where the rough and coastal bush can be very punishing especially if the wind gets up as it did on this particular day.

Not to be phased by the weather, Craig Allen fired a gross score of 72 to take first place in the A Division. Second place two shots behind was Sean Fenger with a gross score of 74. The wind definitely had an impact on scores as the rest of the A Division finished on gross 77 and upwards.

The Best Nett prize in the A Division went to Dave Fisher with 82 less 9 h’cap = 73 nett. Runner-up was Alex Pillay with 77 less 2 h’cap = 75 nett.

There were some good scores in the B Division with Ganas Naicker earning himself first place with 39 individual stableford points playing off a 15 h’cap. Second place went to Leslie Moonsamy with 38 stableford points playing off a 15 h’cap and third on 37 points was Morgan Subramany playing off a 15 h’cap who counted out Gavin Wilkinson and SS Mzimela in the process.

There were only 13 players in the C Division where four players ended up tied for first place with 37 individual stableford points. Winning the count out to take first place was Garry Fourie playing off a 20 h’cap and second place went to Brian Avnit who played off a 23 h’cap. Counted out was Bridg Rambujan and Paddy Sookdeo.

KZN Senior Results from Royal Durban Golf Club 31/7/2023

Being centrally located, there was a good turnout of 98 golfers for this game at Royal Durban which has recovered remarkably well after the heavy rain just before the Durban July with resultant damage caused by vehicular traffic setting up (and removing) entertainment areas and parking for this prestigious, annual event. Even though tee positions were quite well placed forwards making for a slightly shortened course, there were some tricky and challenging pin positions (some may have said crazy positions) on the greens.

This did not seem to deter the winner of the A Division, Ashwin Krishen, who played magnificent golf on the day. Ashwin played the first nine two under par 33 and stormed home with seven under 30 on the back nine to finish with a brilliant gross score of 63. Coming second with a level par round of gross 72 was Guy O’ Connor. The Best Nett prize in the A Division went to Cyril Frank with a score of gross 75 less 6 h’cap = 69 nett. Runner-up was Keith Williamson with gross 77 less 8 h’cap = 69 nett.

There was a good turnout in the B Division where Robin Singh took first place with a great score of 42 individual stableford points playing off a 10 h’cap.

Second was Morgan Subramany with 41 points playing off a 16 h’cap, third was Gary Price with 39 points playing off a 15 h’cap and fourth place went to Athol van der Merwe with 38 points playing off a 17 h’cap.

There were only two places paid out in the C Division and these went to the winner, Sharky Adams with 36 individual stableford points playing off a 20 h’cap with the runner-up being Basil King with 35 points playing off a 20 h’cap.

Congratulation to all the prize-winners.

Many thanks to our sponsor, The Golfers Club for their continued support.
