A sweltering, energy-sapping day was experienced by the 96 players that turned out for the first monthly tournament of 2023 at Victoria Country Club, Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday 24th January. Victoria CC was in excellent condition and the greens a pleasure to putt on even though they were to my mind, not as responsive as previously experienced. A great day’s golf nevertheless with some good scores being returned in all divisions.

Gary Welsh (pictured above with Richard Nel) shot a gross 73 to take first place honours in the A Division having won on a count-out from Keith Ford who also returned a score of 73 gross. Keith therefore took second place.

Keith Williamson played solid golf to take the Best Nett prize in the A Division with a score of 78 gross less 8 h’ cap = 70 nett. Runner-up was Izak Hanekom with a good score of 74 gross less 3 h’ cap = 71 nett.

Daya Gounden (pictured above with Richard Nel) was the best in the B Division and took first place with an impressive 41 individual stableford points playing off a 16 handicap. Second was Mike Sekobane with 39 points playing off an 18 handicap, third was Prakesh Bagwandeen with 38 points playing off a 17 handicap and fourth was Robin Singh with 37 points playing off an 11 handicap.

Two places were paid in the C Division and these went to Ompra Ramlakahn in first place with a score of 35 stableford points playing off a 19 handicap (no photograph available). Runner-up was Ashley Williams with 30 points playing off a 24 handicap.

Our next monthly tournament is scheduled to be played at Cottswold Downs on 7th February. Entries for the KZN Senior Classic to be played at Kloof Country Club over 2nd-3rd March and the KZN Senior Championships to be played at Victoria CC on 5th-6th March 2023 have been circulated by email and sent to all Golf Clubs as well, so please get your entries in to the KZNGU Offices soonest.
